Hashimoto Gaho

Biography

1835~1908

Hashimoto Gaho was Japanese painter from Meiji period. He was a pupil to Kanō Shōsen'in and, together with Kano Hogai, established the Kanga-kai. His style incorporated western painterly expression with Kano school aesthetics, which, in turn, laid foundations for modern Nihon-ga. Alongside great figures, such as art critic Ernest Fenollosa and Japanese intellectual Okakura Tenshin, Hashimoto was a pioneer who promoted the Nihon-ga reformation movement. He became the chief professor at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo School of Art) and was the founder of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Fine Arts Academy). Amidst his many achievements, he helped cultivate the talents of important pupils, such as Yokoyama Taikan and Kawai Gyokudo.
