Hishida Shunso

Biography

Hishida Shunso (1874-1911) was a Japanese-style painter of the Meiji period. He, alongside Yokoyama Taikan and Shimomura Kanzan, were key players in Okakura Tenshin's innovation of Nihonga. He was also an active member of the Japanese Art Institute, which centered itself on the works of Tenshin. Now remembered as a vanguard of Japanese-style painting, his unique style ("moro-tai", lit. vague-style painting) is said to have revolutionized the world of Japanese-style painting. Challenging past ideas, he was dedicated his life to the progression and modernization of Japanese-style painting.
