Ito Jakuchu

Biography

1716~1800

A Japanese painter born in Kyoto who was active during the mid to late Edo period. Whilst his name was Jyokin, his various aliases include Keiwa, Tobeian and Beito-o. He began as a Kano school painter, but would move onto Song, Yuan, Ming-style painting and eventually, together with Ogata Korin, forms their own school of painting. His paintings of roosters were so great that they were named, "Jakuchu's Roosters". Alongside Soga Shohaku and Nagasawa Rosetsu, Ito Jakuchu is often described as an "eccentric painter".
