Biography

1898~1972

Ito Shinsui (1898-1972) was a Japanese artist of the Taisho to the Showa period. He was born in Tokyo under the name Ito Hajime and studied under the leading master of Bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), Kaburaki Kiyokata. His works "Hago no Oto" and "Sunny Autumn" were selected as special selections at the Imperial Academy Exhibition (Tei-ten). He became established as a respected Bijin-ga artist and, while standing in the tradition of Ukiyo-e, challenged contemporary customs and paved the way towards a new artistic direction.
