Kaburaki Kiyokata

Biography

1878~1972

Kaburaki Kiyokata was a Japanese painter of the Meiji to Showa period. He was born in Tokyo and became a disciple to the acclaimed Ukiyo-e artist, Mizuno Toshikata, at 13 years old. He actively illustrated for newspapers and magazines, formed the “Ugo-kai” and began to study and create Japanese-styled paintings. Giving freshness to the aesthetic of Edo-period Ukiyo-e and, through his illustrations, he formed a strong, collaborative relationship with, the writer, Izumi Kyoka. He is also a receiver of the Bunkakunsho (Order of Culture), a prestigious Japanese award.
