Kawaguchi Ekai was a Meji to Showa period Tibetan linguist, Buddhist monk and explorer. He studied philosophy and visted Tibet twice, when it was under seclusion, and brought back various valuable objects, such as Tibetan sutras. He was a professor at Taisho University and his written works includes "Three Years in Tibet".
