Koiso Ryohei

Biography

Koiso Ryohei (1903-1988) was a Showa period Western-style painter. He was born in the Hyogo prefecture and, whilst attending the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, his works were awarded special selection at the prestigious Teiten exhibitions. After studying in France, alongside vanguard artists like Genichiro Inokuma, he formed new artist circles. He was awarded the Geijutsuinsho Jyusho (Art Academy Award) and became a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He is both, a member of the Geijutsuin (Imperial Fine Arts Academy) and a recipient of the Bunkakunsho (Order of Culture).
