Kumagai Morikazu

Biography

Kumagai Morikazu (1880-1977) was a Meiji to Showa period Western-style painter. He was born in Gifu and graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. His works were selected for the Bunten exhibitions but, following his mother's passing, he moved to the Kiso Mountains. Under the advice of fellow painter, Saito Toyosaku, he moved to Tokyo and became a member of the Nikakai (Nika Association). He declined, both, the Bunkakunsho (Order of Culture) and the Bunkajokun (Order of Cultural Merit), and was known as "the Hermit of the Art World". In his later years, he would develop a simple painting aesthetic and mastered ink painting and calligraphy.
