Nakamura Hochu

Biography

The Late Edo period painter, Nakamura Hochu was born in Kyoto, but lived in Osaka. He switched from Nanga to Rinpa painting, and painted figures and flowers. He was also a proficient haiku poet and interacted closely with Kimura Kenkado. Although Hochu is classified as a Rinpa school painter, he held a unique presence in the early modern Osaka art world with his amateurish and humorous expressions, which contrasted the generalized view of the Rinpa school’s extravagant and ornate aesthetic.
