Biography

Natsume Soseki (1867–1916) is widely considered to be the greatest novelist of the Meiji Era. Along with Mori Ogai, he is seen as one of the two greatest early modern writers who transformed Japanese literature. After studying haiku under Masaoka Shiki, he worked on literary sketches at the recommendation of Takahama Kyoshi and produced a variety of creative works. His most internationally recognized novels include “I Am a Cat”, “Sanshiro”, “And Then”, “The Gate”, “Kokoro” and his unfinished work “Light and Darkness”, all of which have been translated to multiple different languages. He was also a scholar of British literature and writer of haiku, kanshi, and fairy tales.
