Ogata Kenzan

Biography

Ogata Kenzan was a (1663-1743) mid-Edo period potter/painter who was born in Kyoto. He was the third son of a kimono merchant, Ogata Soken, and younger brother to Ogata Korin, the highly acclaimed Rinpa painter. He learned pottery under Nonomura Ninsei and took to iro-e (over glaze enamel). His iro-e is well known for their individuality and superior quality. He learned to paint from his brother, Korin, and, in his later years, moves to Edo (present Tokyo) and opens his own kiln.
