Biography

1658-1716

Ogata Korin (1658-1716) was a mid-Edo period painter and lacquer artist. Born in Kyoto, he was the second son of the kimono merchant, Ogata Soken, and older brother to renowned pottery artist, Ogata Kenzan. He first learned painting from his father and would later go under the tutelage of Yamamoto Sōken, a Kano school painter. Aspiring towards Yamato-e (Tang dynasty inspired Japanese painting), he admired the works of Tawaraya Sotatsu and Honami Koetsu. A representative of Genroku period (1688-1704) culture, he was a highly skilled painter who would work on various mediums, from traditional paintings to ceramics, lacquer-ware and kimono embroidery.
