Okochi Yako

Biography

Okochi Yako (1893-1957) was a Japanese painter of the Meiji-Showa period. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture, after graduating from Kyoto Kaisen, he studied under Kikuchi Keigetsu. He was strongly influenced by Tomioka Tessai, Aoki Mokubei, Uragami Gyokudo and others, and also had a deep knowledge of Chinese calligraphy and painting, and excelled in landscape and flower and bird paintings based on Yamato-e style. Specially selected at the Imperial Art Exhibition.
