Biography

1761~1829

Sakai Hoitsu was a late-Edo period painter and poet. Known as the founder of Edo Rinpa, he studied the works of the great mid-Edo painter, Ogata Korin. Praised for his incorporation of elegant haiku with highly ornate paintings, his works are highly renowned by, both, Japanese and Western scholars. His folding screen "Summer and Autumn Flower Plants" has been classified by Japan as Important Cultural Property.
