Serizawa Keisuke

Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984) was a Taisho to Showa period textile designer, born in Shizuoka. Graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. His encounter with Yanagi Soetsu, the founder of Mingei Movement, and his visits to Okinawa inspired him to create his signature katazome (stencil-dyeing) works. He has gained great acclaim, both, in Japan and abroad, and his works have been known to be admired by French intellectuals. He was invited by the French government to hold a large-scale solo exhibition in Paris and is a designated Person of Cultural Merit.
