Takehisa Yumeji

Biography

Takehisa Yumeji (1884-1934) was a poet and painter of the Meiji to Showa period. Born in Okayama Prefecture, he dropped out of Waseda Jitsugyo and, through the encouragement of Arahata Kanson, published caricatures in socialist magazines which made him famous. He aspired to become a poet, but turned to painting instead and became well-known for his depictions of female characters with large eyes. Yumeji’s works express a sense of nostalgia and longing. In addition to paintings and illustrations, Yumeji also wrote poems and nursery rhymes.
