Biography

1851~1918

Watanabe Seitei was a Japanese painter who was born in Edo and was active during the Meiji to Taisho period. His last name changed from Yoshikawa to Watanabe when adopted by his father's literary friend. He studied under the famous painter, Kikuchi Yosai and became one of the first Japanese painters to visit Europe. Watanabe Seitei presented his works at the Exposition Universelle (Paris Expo, 1878), which, in turn, was seen and inspired the works of Impressionists, such as Degas and Manet. A highly acclaimed artist, Watanabe Seitei's Japanese paintings are especially unique for their incorporation of Western realism.
