Biography

Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888) was a Bakumatsu to Meiji period swordsman and politician. He was born in Edo (present Tokyo) under the name Tetsutaro. He trained under Chiba Shusaku and established the Muto Ryu (the “No-Sword Style”), and eventually opened a dojo called Shunpukan. Together with the likes of Takahashi Deishu, he worked to maintain security in Edo and, following the Meiji Restoration, became an official of the Shizuoka Domain, and served as a counselor in the Ibaraki prefecture.
