Ikkyu Sojun “Poems”

Ink on paper, with a certificate of authenticity by Tayama Honan
63×38cm / 146×50cm

Ikkyu Sojun, affectionately known as “Ikkyu-san,” was a Zen monk from the Muromachi period who remains beloved to this day. Known for his eccentricity despite being a Zen monk, he often lived free from traditional constraints, enjoying worldly pleasures. Despite his unconventional lifestyle, he was a dedicated priest who sought the way of Zen throughout his life. This piece, reflecting on the challenging path of Zen, shines with its elegant kana script. The graceful yet stern presence embodies the true essence of Ikkyu's calligraphy. It is a rare work that allows us to experience the profound spirituality of Ikkyu Sojun, who embraced both the sacred and the profane in his life.
