Okyo, the master of Edo painting, opened up new horizon in Japanese painting through his realistic expressions. Realistic and charming, Okyo’s animals are one of the reasons why his works are adored to this day. He is also known for incorporating the western perspective method, which technique was rarely seen in his time. Using this method, he came to known for his landscape paintings, which can be seen in this works as well. In addition, the appearance of the pines covered in white snow is majestic and reminiscent of the national treasure folding screens "Pine Trees in the Snow", making this work a gem that wonderfully incorporates the artistry and expressions of the genius Okyo.
