Kawanabe Kyosai “Zhong Kui”

Kawanabe Kyosai was a painter who lived from the late Edo period through the Meiji era.
He studied painting techniques from a wide range of traditions and is said to have created thousands of works throughout his lifetime, depicting subjects ranging from Buddhist paintings to caricatures and satirical drawings. Although he painted many depictions of Zhong Kui, this particular composition, showing Zhong Kui pointing his sword directly at a demon, is quite rare.
The demon's trembling figure is somewhat comical, and Kyosai’s characteristic humor brings this inherently evil creature to life with a certain charm.
This masterpiece conveys the exhilaration of an artist fully immersed in depicting stories born from the interplay of opposing forces: good and evil, beauty and ugliness, stillness and movement.
